Costa del Sol - places worth visiting during a week stay

Title

Costa del Sol - for many, the “Coast of the sun”, for others the “Coast of golf” and for others the area full of magical nooks that are definitely worth visiting during your stay.

7 days and 7 places - a week on the Costa del Sol

Costa del Sol is about 300 km of the coast full of sun (about 300 days a year), positive energy and diversity. Every year, the Costa del Sol attracts crowds of tourists. Be careful though - this place is dangerous. Many of those who came here to spend only a few days decided to stay for life ... I have lived on the Costa del Sol for several years now and I am still discovering its new faces, and my list of recommendable places goes on and on. In fact, every place in this area is worth a visit, regardless of whether it is a small village or a seaside resort, each of them offers something special for the traveler.

Day 1 - Nerja

Nerja - is a town on the Costa del Sol, located about 40 minutes drive from Malaga. It offers many diverse attractions, including picturesque streets and beautiful beaches with crystal clear water. An ideal place for nature lovers.

This is where you can visit Cuevas de Nerja, fabulous caves located 158 m a.s.l., about 5 km long, open to the public practically all year round (except January 1 and May 15). Get ready, however, for queues, this place is quite popular. Cuevas de Nerja were discovered in 1959 by a group of children playing in the area, the inauguration took place a year later, in June 1960, since then every year celebrates this occasion with concerts taking place nearby. There is also a cozy restaurant with delicious food.

El Balcón de Europa - a point not to be missed while in Nerja. One of the most recognizable places in the area, a beautiful viewpoint. Formerly used as a fortress for watching pirates, today it is the perfect place to take a photo, walk quietly and drink coffee in truly royal company. On the square there is a monument of King Alfonso XII, to whom El Balcón de Europa got its name

Alternative options: canoeing on the coves between the cliffs or a walk along the riverbed of the Rio Chillar River. Nerja offers extremely picturesque landscapes and crystalline water, so being there is worth going on a kayak trip or scuba diving. Important: you should remember about comfortable footwear, headgear, sunscreen cream and waterproof backpack (or at least a special bag in which you can put e.g. a phone or wallet).

Day 2  - Málaga

Malaga, as befits a large city and capital of the province, offers a lot of diverse attractions, the city never sleeps and its streets get never empty. It is obligatory to go through the center with beautiful squares and streets, visit the Cathedral, the Alcazaba, the ruins of the Teatro Romano, several museums (and there are plenty to choose from - there are about 40 of them in Malaga!) And of course the port and promenade. I would like to recommend you one more place, not as popular as all others, but definitely worth recommending: Mirador de Gibralfaro. This is a free viewpoint from which you can see the port, the bullring and a part of the city. The entrance to the point is from the port, behind the townhall building, it is quite steep and can make you tired, but it is definitely worth it.

Malaga - Costa del Sol

Day 3 - Benalmádena

The next point on the map worth highlighting with a pin is Benalmadena, divided into two parts - Benalmadena Costa (coast) and Benalmadena Pueblo (town). Two completely different parts, one bearing all the features of a holiday resort, the other extremely picturesque and romantic. Both worth recommending. The most important places to watch in Benalmadena are: the port (called Little Venice), Mariposarium or Butterfly Park, Castillo de Colomares (quite curious), and a cable car, which in addition to views from the top also offers eagle flight shows..

Benalmadena - Costa del Sol

Day 4 -  Mijas Pueblo

Right next to Benalmadena, about 20 minutes drive up from the coast is one of the most recognizable white towns of Andalusia - Mijas Pueblo. It is famous for its beautiful views, picturesque streets, chocolate factory and donkey taxis. Being there, be sure to go to the chocolate factory, where workshops are organized, during which you can create your own chocolate bar. And then, with a sense of well-fulfilled duty - eat it :)

Day 5 - Marbella

Marbella - the queen of the Costa del Sol, called the Spanish Saint Tropez. It gained its fame many years ago thanks to many celebrities who in Marbella arranged a place of summer rest and made it transform from the village into a city where the number of inhabitants increases three times in the summer season! Some love her, others hate her, one thing is certain - she is not indifferent to anyone. If you want to learn more about places worth visiting, check out our blog entry "Marbella - what to see here ...". I recommend a trip to the top of La Concha, these views are worth a world (and a few hours of climbing)!

Day 6 - Estepona

Heading west from Marbella you will find Estepona on the map. Although it has always been in the shadow of Marbella, there is not much to envy. It offers visitors long and wide beaches and a promenade along which you can play large-format chess or checkers, drink coffee or sit down in one of the numerous chiringuitos (restaurants on the beach) and eat delicious seafood or fish made from embers (so-called al espeto). Estepona also has an old town, full of charming nooks and colorful pots. In the port you may not find Chanel or Dolce & Gabbana stores, but a visit to it will certainly be pleasant.

Day 7 - Sotogrande

Approximately 100 km from Malaga airport, belonging to the municipality of San Roque in the province of Cádiz. An unusual and full of luxury place. It is here that the richest and most recognized people spend their holidays (although they do it very discreetly as opposed to celebrities visiting Marbella). You will meet, among others, members of the elite and royal families. Sotogrande is a port, golf, polo, horse riding and a number of other attractions in which you can participate or just watch. All year round, you can go horse riding, kite surfing and fishing, as well as stroll among the amazing landscapes of two nature parks located in the vicinity: Los Alcornocales and the nature reserve of the Guadiaro River. Being in the area it is worth visiting the beach Playa de El Cabrero o Cala Sardina - extremely small but charming, the only beach with dark sand in the area.
